Himachal Pradesh is located in the North of India.It has multiple mountains which have tremendously amazing scenaries.while leh is the capital of ladakh,the newly formed union territory whereas Manali is a high altitude town famous as a tourist attraction.The distance between leh and Manali is 426.9 kms and it takes 11 hours and 17 minutes to reach from leh and Manali.

For the purpose of reducing the distance between both the places Atal tunnel was built up in the memory of the former prime minister of india "Atal bihari Vajpayee".This is commonly called as leh-manali highway because it's on the route of leh and Manali.The way was previously known as "Rohtang tunnel" and it built on Pir panjal mountain range (Himalyas).

It is built by an  association work of AFCONS(an indian construction company) and STRABAG (Austria).While the design was provided by the SMEC (snowy mountains engineering corporation) holdings limited.It was first inaugurated on 26 may , 2002 by the former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee.It is an stratigical tunnel built for travelling through all seasons.

The Route Is Made To Cover Up Distance From

Leh to Lahual and Spiti valleys.The shape of atal tunnel is like a horse-shoe on view built on a high altitude of 3000 metres-3100 metres.The tunnel strategically reduced the distance between Manali and keylong.Thus decreasing the travel time too.The previous road used to go through Gramphu which was about 116 kms.

The road connectivity was previously very dangerous way as there was high altitude and the width of the road was minimum.The snowfall happens 6 months every year which endangers the life of the travellers.The turns and curves of the road was a major concern.The dangerous topography demanded a solution and Atal Tunnel resolved it.

The estimated cost of constructing the atal tunnel is approx 3,500 crores.During the snowfall of about 6 months every year the way was cut off completely.This tunnel has solved this issue too.The approximate cost during the regin of atal bihari vajpayee was 100 crores.Even the foundation stone was kept but the tunnel remained only on the paper works and no construction took place.

THE CONSTRUCTION OF ATAL TUNNEL

The machinery which is commonly used for excavation could not reach upto the higher altitude of 3000 metres so the technique used for excavation was the drill and blasting technique.The tunnel was excavated from both the ends , the northern end and the southern end but most of the part was excavated from the south region.explosives were kept on the places and the rock was cut due to the blast.This technique is usually used for constructing tunnels,dams and paths and around 14 lakh cubic metres rocks and soils were dug out by blasting during the whole procedure.14,508 metric tonnes of steel was used for the overall construction of the tunnel along with 2 lakhs 30 thousand metric tonnes of cement.

FACILITIES OF ATAL TUNNEL

The tunnel is built with utmost safety measures and has many facilities for the travellers.These measures include the fire hydrants which can be used if any fire breaks out in the tunnel and it is fitted every 60 metres of distance.the care has been taken that if there is an emergency situation and there is a need for exit , the tunnel has exit points at every 500 metres.For the connectivity purpose it contains telephonic facilities too.there is a telephone at a distance of every 150 metres.The tunnel is monitored by the CCTV cameras installed on every 250 metres of distance.The need for a broadcasting system to monitor the weather all the time for any alarming situation is also installed in the tunnel.

THE MAIN FEATURES OF ATAL TUNNEL

The length of atal tunnel is about 9 kms.which reduces the overall time taken to travel from Manali to keylong.

K.P Purushotaman has said that the distance reduced is about 46 kms between leh and Manali.

The tunnel provides all year round connectivity to the Manali and Spiti vally without any barrier of the snowfall.Almost 4 hours of the time can be saved by this tunnel.

The tunnel is built with safety measures like fire extinguishers,weather broadcasting system , emergency exits and CCTV cameras installed.

The actual roadway got reduced to 71 kms and which can be covered in a timespan of about 2 hours.
